Digital publishers make space and attention available to advertisers through a range of approaches, including direct sponsorships and network-delivered campaigns. A useful monetisation plan starts with the audience, the inventory available and the experience the publisher wants to protect.

Know the inventory

Inventory is the placement opportunity a publisher may be able to offer, such as display placements, sponsorship packages or video opportunities. Inventory should be described by real, verified characteristics: content context, format, geography where known, availability and the technical requirements of delivery.

Do not use the appearance of a brand logo in historic records as proof of a current paid relationship. Confirm the status of any current offerings and avoid promising audience figures without current measurement.

Measure revenue honestly

CPM compares impression costs; eCPM estimates effective revenue per thousand eligible impressions; page RPM estimates revenue per thousand page views. These denominators are different. A site with multiple ads per page can have an ad eCPM that is not equal to page RPM.

Protect visitor experience

Ad pressure, page performance and intrusive formats can hurt returning readership even when short-term revenue increases. Evaluate ad load, viewability, accessibility, layout shifts, privacy obligations and suitability alongside price.

Questions a sponsor or buyer may ask

  • What content and audience does the placement reach?
  • Which formats are supported and what assets are needed?
  • What campaign goals can reasonably be measured?
  • How are ads labelled and placements managed?
  • What reporting cadence and approval process are agreed?

Plan the conversation

A clear media partnership request should say who you represent, the market or audience of interest, campaign timing, creative format and the intended outcome.
